The Power of Africana

African American women have faced oppression that is parallel to no other human experience. While bathrooms are no longer segregated, and our black brothers and sisters can vote, racism is still woven tightly into American culture. Pair that with being a women, and you find a group you could never relate to unless you're part of it. Despite constant hardships and obstacles set for black women in America, they make up a large portion of the strongest American citizens. This exhibit is meant to highlight and praise 12 of the most influential women in our country's history.

While us women are fighting the feminist fight everyday, we don't have to fight to be recognized as another human being like several of these women did. These women have defied the odds and are proof that 1) women are just as strong, if not stronger, than men and 2) black people are just as smart, if not smarter, than white people. Some of us may think of those things as no-brainers, but when looking at the media we see that people are still discriminating based on gender and skin color. I am most inspired by powerful, strong, African American women, and will forever to look up to them as some of the best our country's got.
