Mujeres Divinas

                                       Mujeres o Mujeres Tan Divinas

Being a woman is allowing yourself to feel — feel the rich history of your people and bring it to life after many years of it being put on the back of everyone's mind.

When I think of women I think of people who look like me; people who resemble my dark complexion and my handwork. However, I know that within our society that is not true because my skin color is always addressed, but my hard work isn't — what I often hear is that women of color are ignorant, uneducated and ghetto. Nevertheless, I always think of my role models: Michelle Obama, Toni Morrison, and Frida Kahlo, but the one thing I hear when I speak about these women are "Michelle Obama is the exception, not the rule.”

Being a woman means being a symbol of strength. It means dealing with the weight of the world and detaching yourself from it to put on a smile.

When I think of women I think of someone who can do it all — someone who can be a mother, a wife, a worker, a dreamer, and even a chef sometimes. However, within our society, we have objectified women and taken away their worth, and only see them as sex symbols instead of capable human beings. As such, women are glorified but how great their bodies look, and not by their capacity to do hard things.

Being a woman means more than just your youth

Growing up I always heard the saying “men get better with age”, however at the same time I was always told “enjoy your youth this is as good as it gets for women”— this to me was repulsive. I refuse to believe that this small fraction of my life in which I am youthful is the only time I will be heard and valued. The media needs to stop producing movies in which a husband leaves his wife for a younger version because age does not defy our excellence nor our worth.

Being a woman use to mean having the "right" anatomy. However, now we know that being a woman just means to feel like a woman.

Growing up I use to think that a woman was only a woman if she was able to give vaginal birth, and I wish that my parents wouldn't have raised me that way. I know now that women are more than just their body parts, and that people within the transgender community can be women too without having to physically alter themselves. Nevertheless, society is like my parents and refuses to acknowledge that a woman is worth more than her vagina.

Being a woman is being one God’s greatest creations — this planet. The world is often referred to as mother nature because it is like a woman who is gentle and kind, but can cause a storm when provoked.

Growing up I have always seen the perfect woman on television — a woman who is sweet, kind, gentle and extremely motherly. However, when a woman acts like something different she is an outsider and a disgrace because women can't be less than perfect. This creates an unrealistic ideal in which women often battle between trying to be who they want and trying to be a fictional character that men want.

Being a woman means being it all

When I think of a billboard model I often think of a woman with long tan legs, a skinny body, wonderful halo blonde hair. Society has created this image of what it means to be a beautiful woman within our society, but this is all a lie. Women don’t have to be skinny, they don't have to tall, they don't have to be white because being a woman is more than physical appearance; it is the way the soul feels. As such, when I think of the ideal woman I only think of my mother who loves me unconditionally.

Being a women means standing up for what you believe in and, never backing down until you have your voice heard.

Women of color have been a marginalized group within this nation for far too long. Now they are becoming a symbol of freedom and strength to others because they are forcing the world to hear their voice. They are protesting and creating hashtags in which the world can see what they have suffered. Nevertheless, society still sees them as less than what they are and refers to them as thugs because they will not be silenced.

Being a woman is having others tell you your worth, but never listening to them because you know more about you than they will ever know.

I often think of every individual woman as some kind of gemstone because all women are different and they each have their own individual worth. Nevertheless, society refuses to acknowledge this and decides to tell women what kind of stone they are. They tell them that they are not bright enough or rare enough and as such, the gems start to doubt their worth because they believe what others say about them and sell themselves for half of their original worth.

Being a woman also means uplifting others. No one brings down someone else, but we all work together to create a more inclusive universe.

When I think of women I see a group of people uniting for a common cause — equality. Regardless, of what equality means specifically most people generalize it to mean an equal life for all. As such, through news outlets, we can see the masses uniting to fight for this as we saw in the Women’s March this year. While many people still refuse to join the movement and see women as leaders I know that we are heading towards a better era.

Being a woman also means being incredibly educated.

Women were denied the right to education for a long time, but now we are seeing more women in the work field with untraditional roles. We can see this through popular shows like Grey’s Anatomy in which we can see the position of chief of general surgery being held by a woman. While some people don’t like this because they believe a woman should stay home and raise kids some television shows are now striving to show that a woman can be both smart and have a successful personal life as well. This to me is the representation that young girls need in their lives instead of being told to just stay home unless they want to.

Being a woman also means being a victim of heinous crimes, but knowing that one day you’ll have the strength to move on.

Within every nation the victims of most crimes are women. They are targeted because they are seen as weak and inferior and many countries are still not sure how to fix these issues. In America, we see this problem because our nation values the life of men more than they do for women. One example of this is Brock Turner who was let out early from his prison sentence even though he raped someone and destroyed her life. As such, within society being a woman is being a second-class citizen, but I believe that the louder we are and the harder we fight we will one day be considered human beings too.

Being a woman is more than just being a pretty face.

It means carrying on your back years of oppression, but still moving forward. It means to be more than just a figure floating in space, but a voice and mind that no one should ever reckon with. Being a woman means being the greatest gift of all even when society doesn't want to see it.
