So Much More

Society has almost always tried to dictate how a woman should look, what a women should be interested in, and how a woman should act.  They use the media to narrow women's perceptions of other women and themselves to keep them stuck where they have always been: behind men.  It is really only recently that women have started to be able to see themselves for who they really are: so much more than who society says they should be.

Focus On Your Looks
Society tells women that their value comes from how they look.  Like in this 1930's ad, women are told they should work hard, not for the satisfaction of working hard or to improve their skills, but to look cute.  That's it.  Just to look cute.  According to the media, a woman's main concern should always be how she looks and how attractive she appears to others.

Sexy For Men
Women are constantly sexualized for men in society.  Women can become nothing more than sex toys, only valuable in how they make men feel physically.  As men's expectations of women grow higher and higher it becomes more and more impossible for women to live up to societies standard of beauty.

Sexy For Other Women
Society pits women against each other.  Most women see another woman's beauty as a threat and invalidation of her own.  Women are constantly sizing each other up and putting each other down to be the prettiest, or the sexiest or just better than the rest in societies view.  Women let themselves be defined by the magazines they read, or the movies they watch, or the music they listen to; when in reality, none of that matters.

Women Define Their Own Selves
Society does not define women. Women define women. We define our own prettiness. We define our own worth. We define our own likes, and interests, and hobbies.  We define what is important. Women define what it means to be female by being so much more than what society says we are.

So Much More Beautiful
Women are so much more beautiful than society would have them believe.  Society picks women apart and pits them against each other and themselves. Society says there is only one way to be perfectly beautiful, when in reality there is so much  unique, stunning beauty in every woman.

Meant For So Much More
Women are meant for so much more than society tells them they are.  So many girls believe they should focus solely on the way they look and finding someone to take care of them because that is what they have been told to do for so long. But women can be whatever they want to be. They can do and accomplish whatever they want to.  They can rule the world.

So Much More Talented
Women are so much more talented than they are lead on to believe.  The first author ever to become a billionaire by writing books was JK Rowling, a woman.  There are so many incredibly talented women in this world who bring so much joy and magic into all of our everyday lives with their many talents and abilities.

So Much More Capable
Women are so much more capable than they've been told in the past.  Throughout history women have been seen as the weaker sex, incapable of true strength and endurance.  Women are strong. They have muscles and stamina and endurance.  They can perform just as well as any man.

So Much More Innovative
We owe so many of the technologies and luxuries that we have today to women.  Stephanie Kwolek is one such woman.  She invented the lightweight, durable fiber that was turned into synthetic Kevlar, which is used for sports equipment, bulletproof vests, building materials, and more.  All thanks to this innovative woman.

So Much More Brillant
The woman that this movie, Hidden Figures, is based on helped send people to the moon! They were brilliant mathematicians and engineers who paved the way for a better workplace future not only women, but for the black community as well.

So Much More
Women today are so much more than what society would have us believe.  We have come so far and accomplished so much and the world is better for it.
